Two limitations have held back hydrogen fuel cells from replacing the engine in our cars. First, the Fuel cells have been very expensive per watt generated ($4500 per kw), because they require a decent amount of platinum as a catalyst. Second, While hydrogen is very efficient per mass, the energy per volume has require the hydrogen, to be high pressure, low temp, or contained in some solid.

If this first problem is eliminated by the removing the platinum, I believe we will see hydrogen fuel cell cars in maybe 3-5 years.
