Stargate SG1 Season 1

DiskEpisodeTitleRatingAnalysis
11Pilot Parts 1&2 ***Of the six people I know besides myself who watched the Stargate movie, four really liked it and two people hated it. The movie is flawed enough that most people wouldn't want to watch it over and over, although I liked it enough that I watched it seven times because I am a sucker for anything science fiction.

In the late 90's the series Stargate SG-1 aired its first pilot on Showtime and the show is still going strong in its 9nth season on the Sci-Fi chanel and has spawned a decent spinoff called Stargate Atlantis also on the Sci-Fi chanel. I think that series has long since surpassed the original movie.

The premise is that a parasitic alien species called the G'ould control the human bodies that they occupy. They also kidnapped humans from Earth and used them as slaves all across the galaxy to mine a material called naqueda. Once the they extracted the naqueda that they needed, the G'ould abandoned many of the humans on other planets.

The alien transportation system is a series of stargates that create temporary wormholes between planets. One of these gates was discovered by humans on Earth.

The TV show is starting to develop new plot lines and new characters which is a good thing, but the television pilot is too heavily tied to the movie. I get the impression that they tried to save money by recycling sets and special effects from the movie. It takes a while for the show to differentiate itself from the movie and eventually surpass it.

I really didn't care for that much for part 1 wich was heavy on explation. Some of the scenes drag out kind of long. The second half is much better with more action and more interesting characters.

I have many minor quibbles: They could have left out the whole Daniel Jackson sneezing bit. It is just there to be a tie into the movie and we never see it again. Richard Dean Anderson is not very believable as Kurt Russel, although Michael Shanks is the spitting image of the Daniel Jackson created by James Spader. The whole sexist argument between Samantha Carter and the other soldiers is annoying. We never find out what happened to the female soldier who was kidnapped but we are lead to believe that she is dead.

Part II contains a full frontal striptease that is not only daring but quite nice to watch.

I have a problem with any science fiction show where the aliens speak english, but in this case the aliens are humans who were kidnapped from Earth and more often than not they are speaking alien tounge. This is not completely plausible but it is more plausible than Star Trek.

12The Enemy Within**** This is really part 3 of the pilot. The episode can stand on its own but it continues from where the pilot left off.

One of the soldiers is infected with a G'ould parasite which takes control of his body.

My initial reaction was that this was a rather predictable premise, but I was pleasantly surprised at how this turned into a very well done drama.

13Emancipation*** As I said before I have a problem with an science fiction show where the aliens speak English. In this case the aliens are humans who originated from from Earth, but they are *Mongolians* which means there is absolutely no reason why they should be able to speak English. I find this ALMOST COMPLETELY UNFORGIVABLE. The only thing that saves this episode is that it ends up being pretty good drama despite the English speaking fault.

The major conflict of this show is that a tribal leader kidnaps Major Carter with intentions of marriage. This ends up being resolved with far less force than I would have liked. I think that a normal reaction would have been to call for backup forces and go in with guns blazing.

24The Broca Divide***I am still reeling from the fact that humans living on other planets can speak English. The only way this could possibly make any sense is that the G'ould picked up the language on Earth and taught it to their followers on other worlds. That is a bit of a stretch but one that I might accept for convenience. At least the movie, for all its faults, didn't insult our intelligence by having everybody in the whole galaxy speak the same language. We have to assume that the television show would have been a complete failure if the characters always had to struggle with the language barrier in every single episode. Star Trek handled the problem by "cheating" with a magical piece of technology called a "Universal Translator." They took it even farther in Deep Space 9 so as to have every character always hear their native language regardless of what tounge it was spoken in. That was a bit of a stretch except maybe for the Ferengi who had the devices implanted in their ears.

Having very reluctantly accepted the notion that most of the galaxy can speak English, I can say that this is a good episode but not a great one. Our intrepid explorers bring back a nasty plague that turns them into proto-neanderthals. The notion of bringing back a plague from another planet is a recuring theme in Stargate SG-1, even in season 9. You would think that after 9 years they would figure out a way to stop doing that.

They discover a cure to the plague but it seemed a little implausible to me.

One of the coolest things about Stargate SG-1 is they spend about 7 years aquiring technology from other planets. They start out with 20nth century technology and by the time they get to season 8 they have reached the level of Star Trek technology including interstellar space ships and transporters. Seeing that transition slowly evolve adds to the show. What makes this better than Star Trek is that these are 21st century characters living with 24th century technology. There is no "Star Fleet" but a fragmented coalition trying to fight off alien invaders.

Broca, by the way, was a french anthropologist who studied primitive human skulls.

25The First Commandment***A member of the SGC sets himself up as a god on another planet full of primatives.
26Cold Lazarus ***Jack O'neil is duplicated by a cristalin entity.
27Brief Candle *****The SG1 visits a world where the people age very quickly. Colonel O'neil also begins to age quickly.

You would expect that if you took a mediocre movie and made it into a television show that most of the first season would be pretty rough. Instead I was blown away by Richard Dean Anderson's performance. This episode may be the best of the first season and solidifies the show as one worth watching.

28Thor's Hammer ***Traveling to a planet quarantined by the Goa'uld, Jack and Teal'c are trapped in an underground labyrinth.
39The Torment of Tantalus****The SGC discovers that experiments done on the stargate in 1945 left a man stranded on another world. They mount a rescue party after 50 years.

What would happen to you if you were left alone on a planet for 50 years? Would you go crazy? This show attempts to answer this question and does it very well. It is a "Castaway" kind of theme.

If it weren't for this episode you could skip disk 3 and not miss anything important.

There is a sub plot where Daniel Jackson is caught up in what they find on this planet, but this seemed overdone to me. I think that it was filler.

310Bloodlines ***T'ealc convices SG1 to rescue his son from Chulac and capture an infant G'ould.

My first problem with this is that the SG1 team completely failed to accomplish any of their objectives. Daniel Jackson takes an unnecesary risk that puts their mission at risk and their escape from Chulac was far too easy.

A fair rating for this would have been about 2.9. It is a borderline episode. It could have been a better episode but the pacing is a bit slow and it is heavy on dialoge and light on action. On the plus side show introduces the very important characters of Riac and Bratek.

311Fire and Water **A humanoid fish creature uses mind control to convince the SG1 team that Daniel Jackson is dead.

I can't say that this a bad episode but it is by no means a good episode. It is somewhere inbetween. I kept wanting it to just be a little better than it was. The plot and the alien have a 1950's B movie quality to them. Generally speaking, humanoid fish creatures are a bad idea. Buffy The Vampire Slayer tried to do a knock off of "Creature from The Black Lagoon" or "Swamp Thing" and it just didn't work.

If you skip this episode you miss nothing. I had complete forgotten it by the time I saw it a second time. The last 30 seconds was a nice comic relief.

312The Nox **Two armies on the verge of killing each other visit a planet full of simple peace loving people with strange powers who stop the fighting and send the two armies home. This is the exact same plot that was on an episode of the old Star Trek show. It is an O.K. episode but there is nothing original here and no reason to want to watch it a second time.
313Hathor ***The episode starts with the discovery of an Egyption sarcophagos in a Mayan temple. The Egyption goddess Hathor awakens from the tomb, somehow makes her way to Stargate Command. Hathor is captured and interigated. She acts like a G'ould, and all the evidence suggests that she might be a G'ould, but for some reason the SGC is slow to catch on and assumes that she is a nut job. She emits a pheromone to influence men to do her bidding (where have we seen that before?) and immediately starts to control all the men at the SGC. Captain Carter realizes that something is dreadfully amiss.
414Cor-Ali ***T'ealc stands trial for his past misdeads.
415Singularity ****SG1 visits a planet where the population has been wiped out by a plague all except for one little girl who mysteriously survived. They bring her back to Earth only to discover something very dangerous inside her.

Alfred Hitchcock once gave an example of a way to make a show suspensful. He said to imagine a scene where two men are sitting at a table talking. This by itself is not very interesting, but then the camera switches to show that there is a bomb under the table. The men are unaware of it so they continue talking, but now the audience is very involved in this conservatation because they are aware of the danger that exists. Hitchcock added that the writer/director should never actually allow the bomb to go off.

In this episode the bomb is in a little girl, and it can't be removed and the characters are aware of it. What they

choose to do about it is what makes this episode great. I am beginning to see what this series is about, which is how people relate to each other not only from different societies but as individuals.

416Enigma ***SG1 rescues a group of more technologically advanced humans who have no desire to share their technology despite their refugee status. One of them takes a liking to Samantha Carter.
417Tin Man ***Odd that they should use the same title as one of the shows from Star Trek. SG1 returns from a mission to discover that "they are not themselves."
418Solitudes ***Colonel O'neil and Captain Carter end up stranded on an ice planet.

****Really liked it.
*****Loved it.

Stargate SG1 Season 6

DiskEpisodeTitleRatingAnalysis
11Redemption (1)**** SG1 Defends itself from Annubis

12Redemption (2)**** SG1 Defends itself from Annubis

13Descent****SG1 explores the ship left by Annubis

Great role for Jonas Quin.

14Frozen****SG1 find an "Ancient" woman burried in Ice.

Very cerebral episode. I liked it.

25Nightwalkers***A rip off of Invastion of the Body Snatchers but stil O.K.

26Abys*****Jack is captured and tortured by the G'ould Ba'al.

Daniel Jackson makes his first appearance since he "ascended".

There are some nifty special effects in this one.   Ba'al is a cool villian.

27Shadow Play***Jonas Quin is visited by an unstable friend.

Definately a borderline episode for me.

28The other guys**.5A couple of comical physicysts try to rescue SG-1.

Every once in a while SG-1 just gets silly.   The premise reminded me of "Lower Decks" on "Startrek The Next Generation."

39Allegience***Jaffa and Tokra fued at the alpha site.

I was little bothered by the premise, but by the end the show delivers.

310Cure***SG-1 encounter a people who have perfect health, but at a price.

It is an interesting premise, but the show is all talk and little action.

311Prometheus****Earth's first interstellar space craft is hijacked.

There is much here to like.

312Unatural Selection****

Part II is really a different story but takes us in new interesting directions.

413Sight Unseen***An alien device reveals invisible aliens .... everywhere.

Liked the ending.

414Smoke and Mirrors***Jack becomes the suspect in the murder of a Senator.

Heavy on talk, but by the end it delivers just enough.

415Paradise Lost***Maybourne and O'neil get stranded on a planet.

My problem with the episode is that there is not a lot for the characters to do on the planet except get paranoid of each other. I liked the way it ended.

416Metamorphasis**Nirti experiments on humans

It failed to hold my attention.

517Disclosure*The existence of the Stargate is revealed to representitives from other countries.

I simply hate clip shows. The ending was actually a nice payoff but hardly justifies the rest.

518Forsaken***SG-1 discovers a crashed prision ship.

There is a certain uncomfortable tension here that continues throughout the episode. The issue is that we suspect, as does O'niel, that the crew of the ship are up to no good. However, nobody else seems to realize this, and we as the audience feel a sense of danger while wondering why SG-1 is being so obtuse.

519The Changeling*****T'ealc is caught between two realities.

Great, great show.

520Memento****The first official interstellar flight of the Prometheus does not go as planned.

I must have missed the first two minutes when I taped it, which is mostly just talk, but the next five minutes is crammed full of stuff: The ship begins its interstellar voyage, breaks down, makes an emergency jump, whereupon the engine core overloads, forcing the crew to eject it whereupon it explodes over a planet, whose occupants interpret this as an act of war and fire nuclear missils at the now helpless ship.....

Are the two nuclear warheads shades of "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy"?

The second half reminds me too much of "First Contact" from "Star Trek The Next Generation"

521Prophecy**.5Jonus Quinn has visions of impending doom for SG-1.

Borderline for me.   Jonus Quinn seems more limited than Daniel Jackson.

522Full Circle****Annubis looks for the eye of Ra.

The final stand off pays off.

Whose idea was it to say "Well, spank me rosy"?

Stargate SG1 Season 7

Most of Season 7 was not very good. The beginning and the ending were great.

DiskEpisodeTitleRatingAnalysis
11Fallen***The first half of this show revolves around them finding Daniel Jackson and is great.

The second half however is a Star Wars rip off even with refences to that movie.   The special effect were great but it all had a deja vu of the first Star Wars movie.

I like how the title refers to both Daniel Jackson and Annubis

12Homecoming***This seems like an elaborate plot to get rid of Quinn.

The plot where Annubis is looking for something seems too close the season 6 ender.

The ship hanging over the city seems like a rip-off of (homage to ?) Independence Day.

13Fragile Balance****Colonel O'Neil has transformed into a teenager.

Great acting by the teenage actor.   Brilliant premise.

Didn't like the final shot.   Shouldn't O'neil adopt this kid?  Why is he dropping him off at a school?   Who is his guardian?

Stargate SG1 Season 9

With the introduction of the Ori, the departure of Richard Dean Anderson and the arrival of Ben Browder, the show enters new territory that I wasn't sure that I was comfortable with. By the end of the season though, I was a believer.

??Crusade****Varla from the Ori galaxy swapws bodies with Daniel Jackson and brings news of an impending invasion.

At first it seemed like Varla's story was going to drag on a bit but I found it quite compelling. The actor who plays Varla's husband reminds me of Nathan Fillon but it isn't him.
